Your First Will Be Your Worst

Whenever you start something “new”, it can feel awkward.

It’s common to feel silly and out of place.

Unfortunately many times it’s these feelings that lead people to just give up and go back to the “way things were”.

Why?

Because it’s comfortable. That’s what we’re familiar with.

But, if you want to grow your business (and membership), you may have to step out of your comfort zone.

Here’s a good example of how I felt like a total goof ball, but now that I’ve done it a few times, I’m getting better and I’m starting to get the results I wanted…

Starting Something New Sucks

Growing up I always played sports competitvely.

Soccer was my “go to” game playing at university and winning two national championships. But the result of all this activity has left my muscles begging for some relief.

Recently I’ve started to experience a variety of back-to-back injuries – all from soccer. First it was my left knee, then my groin and now my hip flexors.

Sitting on the sidelines is SO frustrating but what could I do?

Well after talking to one of my close friends a few months ago, he suggested I try Yoga.

“Yoga?” I said. “Isn’t that for girls?” LOL

He went on, “Honestly Stu, you’ll feel like a million bucks, your muscles will recover faster, you’ll be stronger and most importantly you’ll have far fewer injuries.”

My wife couldn’t help but smile hearing him say that because she too had recommended I go.

But here’s the real reason I didn’t want to try it…

I was afraid.

Seriously.

I’ve never done Yoga and I knew I’d be terrible at it.

I’m not flexible AT ALL and my muscles are extremely tight (which is a major reason I’m starting to experience all these injuries).

But based on Braden’s recommendation and Amy’s encouragement, I gave it a shot.

Well I was right to be nervous. LOL

I couldn’t hold a pose if my life depended on it. I was falling all over the place and felt like a total idiot (I felt bad for everyone else there because it had to be distracting).

And being a somewhat competitive guy, I couldn’t stand being this bad at something.

But thank goodness Amy was with me.

She was my cheerleader and encouraged me to stick it out and try it again (I think it was more for entertainment purposes than anything else!).

Anyway, things have progressed and now, I’m actually starting to get the hang of things.

As a result, I’m feeling better, my muscles have more “spring” in them and I haven’t had an injury since (knock on wood).

So What Does My Yoga Experience Have
To Do With Your Membership Site?

If you are starting your very first membership site, there are probably a lot of things you’re experiencing for the first time.

Perhaps setting up the site, designing different graphics or even creating content and/or marketing.

Sometimes it can be new “terminology” or concepts that seem foreign.

All of this may seem overwhelming or because it’s totally new, it may make you feel a little uncomfortable.

But that’s ok.

Listen, the first content video you create for your site will be aweful.

I’m willing to bet that the lighting will be bad, the sound will suck and you’ll likely fumble several times or have to do several “takes”.

BUT THAT’S OK.

Same goes with your first article, teleseminar, or webinar. There is a good chance they are going to be bad as well (so you might as well get them over with as soon as possible!).

Remember, the first time you ever do something new is almost always going to be the hardest.

But the more you do, the easier it gets.

…AND…

The better you become (so you begin reaping the benefits of it).

Creating content for membership sites doesn’t have to be hard. But you do need to create content because that’s ultimately one of the main things people are paying you for.

Plus, the more you add your personality into your content, the more you’ll bond with your audience.

So at the end of the day never let your inexperience keep you from getting started.

Just get going so that you can get your “first time” out of the way. Then you’ll be well on your way to success!

[SIDENOTE: Yoga is still progressing and I'm still enjoying it - even though I wanted to give up after the first session LOL]
