This article was originally intended to be ‘What Do You Love – Why Not Make A Business Out Of It’ and I then read an article that caused me to put it on hold for just a bit.
The article states that doing what you love is, in their words, “hogwash.”
They state that basically doing what you love is a terrible business idea. The author says that “when you think this way, you’re business becomes your passion. Your art. Your love.”
I would like to ask, “What in the world is wrong with that?!” Why work in something you have no passion or desire for? Why work in something that may dull you or bring you to tears?
In my humble opinion, life is much too short to live in this way.
I truly believe we should strive to either create a business stemming from our passion or to work within a business or job duty that we find enjoyment in.
Of course, not everything will be ‘peach perfect’, but I think we are all wise enough to understand this.
We must put the effort and hard work into anything we try our hand at. For the most part, if we love to do something we are likely to work on perfecting the skills needed to succeed.
Now if there is something you love doing, but really are not that good at (take painting as an example), you probably should not work full-time as a painter. That is not to say, of course, that you shouldn’t persue it as a beloved hobby.
On the other hand, if you have a passion for something and are good at it, I fully believe you should pursue this activity with income in mind.
Do you love books or reading? Maybe you should sell books online or have a bookstore. Maybe you provide a tutoring service in reading. You get the picture.
With anything, you must still focus a business as a business and not a hobby or passion. The passion helps drive you in your interest. With a business you must plan and put into place wise business decisions.
For the creative and/or artsy person, maybe you would rather not focus on the business part of this. If this is true, maybe it’s better for you hire a business manager or look into the possibility of taking on a partner to focus on those areas.
If you have a dream, begin today in working towards it. Begin that membership business and draw them in. “If you build it, they will come.”
You can build a membership website around virtually anything you would like to. There is a potentially large group of people out there that may just be waiting for your business to start so they can join in and learn from you.
Take the leap. You just never know until you actually try.
