Write A Book To Become The Authority and Attract Paying Members – Wait! It’s Easier Than You Think! – Part 1

One of the questions potential sign-ups ask is:

“Why should I join your membership. What makes your membership site different than your competition?”

You can try to convince them with more value, or a cheaper signup fee. Those things work, but the best thing is to become a recognized authority.

If you can present yourself as someone knowledgeable in your field, your claims become more valid because you’re someone they trust to know their craft.

Thanks to Jim Howard from the Big Seminar, I can show you how not to be just known as a mere expert, or even a guru, but rather “The Authority”.

What’s the Difference?
An expert is someone with special skill or knowledge.

These people know the insides and outsides of their field. It’s usually due to significant training or experience. Such a person doesn’t usually teach others although they may share their experience.

A guru is someone with extensive knowledge or expertise. Their area of knowledge exceeds experts and they usually teach or guide others to success in the same field. Most established membership site owners can consider themselves a guru.

An authority is the top level person or one of the small numbers of people at the top. In addition to possessing more knowledge than anyone else, they have the power to influence and change their field. In many cases, what they state (even opinion) is considered fact.

A portion of membership site owners may very well be authorities but just aren’t recognized as such yet.

Recognize my Authority
Simply knowing your craft isn’t enough to become a leader in your field.

You must do the following:
  • Know What You Are Talking About – You must have extensive knowledge about your subject. If there’s another person with more knowledge than you, it will be hard (if not impossible) for you to dominate your market. Make sure your information is as factual as possible. For information that’s subjective (such as the best diet) have the most informed opinion out there.
  • Be Clear – People must understand what you are talking about. Keep the information simple so beginners can follow your thoughts.
  • Stay Current – You never want to be behind the times. While some information is timeless, certainly something new is happening in your market.Find this info and never stop learning. The minute you do, your competition speeds past you to become the new authority.
  • Write a Book! – You can write a book to increase your ability to convince potential members you know your stuff and to be considered an authority in your field.

—————

Will you become rich from the book sales?

Probably not. What a book does is establish yourself as a leader in your industry.

People see your book on your site and that convinces them to sign up. If the book is good, people interview you and you get more exposure and a deeper reach into the media. Experts, Gurus, and even other Authorities will work with you, thus giving you more opportunities.

A book you have authored is a super-deluxe business card where you can brand yourself however you like and give the reader page after page of reasons to do business with you. As long as you’re a subtle about it and every page doesn’t contain a note to sign up.

Treat it as a lead generator and you’ll do fine.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to be an authority for these tips to help. Every step you take toward becoming a recognized authority or one of the few industry leaders only helps your brand and helps convince people to do business with you.

At the very least you increase your credibility and business opportunities which is certainly not a bad thing.

Join me for my next article as we go over how to CREATE the book thanks to the powerful tips from Jim Howard at the last Big seminar.

Creating a book seems like it would be difficult and time consuming, but it really doesn’t have to be. With the options available digitally that @Tony and @David has mentioned, it’s much easier to get a book available than ever before. If you can get your book into bookstores as @KC mentioned, that’s even better! I’m looking forward to the future posts on this topic :)
